Glues & suchlike
The glue that you use is very important and choosing the right glue for the right job is very important. The list below will give you a good guide of what sort of glue to use with different types of materials. At AW we use Deluxe-Materials glues for all of our modeling and as such we will use their "named brands" for reference:
"Speed Bond"
Fast drying PVA glue with "low filler content". This means that the glue will set faster than normal but is not ideal for filling-in large gaps. Cheaper PVA glues have more filler which makes the bond weaker, but cheaper, to fill big gaps. Speed Bond is a good glue to use to stick HA blocks together. It dries clear and can be sanded.
"Aliphatic Resin"
Famous “yellow” wood glue used in professional applications where hard woods are used; dries crisper than PVA giving better sanding. Will not pull joints as it sets resulting in better dimensional stability.
Also sets at low temperatures, and is water resistant.
This glue is THE glue to use with woods such as Balsa or Basswood and especially if you intend to STAIN the wood with wood stain or varnish rather than painting it. This is because Aliphatic Resin will take stain whereas most other glues, such as PVA, are stain resistant resulting in patchy marks and ugly glue-marks.
"R/C Modellers Glue"
Multi-purpose gap filling craft glue. Thick and tacky, dries clear, remains flexible. Bonds combinations of wood plastic, fabric, foil, painted surfaces . Bog-standard modellers glue with lots of uses but little specialisation.
"Plastic Magic"
For assembly of ABS plastic card construction on scale and semi scale models of all types; use for polystyrene kits where an invisible glue line is needed.
"Rocket Cyano Range."
Highest quality cyanoacrylate adhesives. Fluoro-carbon barrier coated bottle for long shelf life and anti-clog action. Designed for use with precise micro tip anti-clog applicator system.
This is essentially the same "super glue" type product that 100 other manufacturers make worldwide. However Deluxe also sell the very good applicator pack "Micro Tips and Tube" which is invaluable (and can be used with other super glues).
" Tacky Glue"
Very sticky glue which dries clear, flexible, and is non-staining. Essentially the same glue as the famous "Tacky Glue" produced in the USA. Ideal for many modeling uses such as applying leaves, scatter and other flocks to various surfaces. Essential for use with Dungeon Creepers and Ivy Stems.
"Scatter-Grip"
Special slow drying tacky adhesive for firmly bonding scatter materials in layouts. This is a slightly more specialised "tacky glue" that remains sticky no matter how long it is left. Ideal for scatter materials as if they wear off you can an simply re-apply them without needing to fix more glue. Better yet this is a viscous liquid that can be applied by brush and allows very fine control of where you want to apply it. It remains flexible and is also ideal for use in making trees, hedges and bushes.
"Pin Point Glue Syringe Kit"
Pack of 2 dispensing syringes and 3 sizes of stainless steel needles for accurate application of water based glues: R/C Modellers Glue, Speedbond, Aliphatic Resin, Tacky Glue, Decorator Glue. Ideal for making rivets on scale models and for dispensing fluxes and oils in model railways.
Stop clogging overnight by resting tips on damp sponge or in water. Clean syringes and tips with warm soapy water after removal of glue.
